WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I first began feeling like an outcast for being overweight in 4th grade.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
At my heaviest I was completely miserable. I resided in a bleak tortuous labyrinth in my mind that was muddled with pain, regret, loathing, and FEAR. My view of life was distorted and my thoughts immersed in a sea of black where everything good was lost. I woke up every morning and looked in the mirror with disgust. How could I have let myself get this repulsive?
And the self-loathing piled up day after day. I managed to maintain a job, and excel at it because it was required of me to financially carry our household. Other than that I spent as much time as possible hiding behind closed doors and in my bed. I missed out on so much precious time with my children because I was consumed by my own darkness. I also had physical ailments. My joints hurt, I snored, (probably had sleep apnea) and had constant GI upset.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After having my second child I began a job as a hospice nurse and this initiated a downward spiral of binge eating fast food, smoking, and stress overload. I was the on call hospice nurse so I attended all of the deaths and helped people who were suffering in their final moments. I did not know how to begin to deal with what I was experiencing on a daily basis.
After about 2 and a half years of doing this I became very ill requiring hospitalization, multiple tests, GI scoping, and exploratory surgery. I was told by the doctors that this was all due to stress. My body had literally given out, and I was bed bound for about a month. This was my wake up call!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I got a new job, stopped smoking on my birthday, and at the turn of a new year joined a kickboxing boot camp. At almost 300lbs I was one of, if not the heaviest person in the bootcamp and it was very difficult to get up and go every day at 5:45am. But I completed it and found that many people there were very positive and encouraging. Slowly I made sustainable changes to clean up my diet and add in more exercise.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
After about a week of exercising I noticed my mentality change in a positive direction. However, physically I didn’t notice for about 3 months, and it took about a month longer than that for other people to notice.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I loved kickboxing it was incredibly stress relieving and I felt powerful every time I rocked the bag. So I signed up for a year membership. A few months later after completing a great morning workout at the gym I was sitting at my desk at work and suddenly everything got blurry; my vision wasn’t completely gone but I couldn’t focus on anything.
As a nurse, a million things that could be wrong rushed through my mind. I laid down and a few minutes later I got a mind splitting headache and was nauseous. I went home and slept it off. Over the next few months this happened a couple of times. One extremely stressful day at work I literally had 4 people standing around my desk asking for assistance and I suddenly lost my vision. I tried to work through it because I knew that I was needed. But my boss insisted that I go home and the owner of the company graciously gave me a ride. I went to bed to sleep it off.
When I woke up that evening my vision was still impaired, head still pounding, and I had new symptoms; I was dizzy and my balance was off when I tried to stand or walk. This lasted for 3 days. The entire time my mind was riddled with possibilities of what the cause was. My biggest fear was that I had a stroke. Finally, I went to the emergency room. $4000.00 worth of tests later I was told that I have complex migraines and that I need to follow up with a neurologist. The next available appointment with a neurologist was 2 months out. This was debilitating and I needed relief or at least a plan sooner, so I decided to see a chiropractor.
The X-rays showed that the normal “C” curvature of my cervical (neck region) spine was reversed; which was most likely due to a car accident from when I was 19. I saw a chiropractor every other day and sometimes daily depending on symptoms. I had to stop working out in order for my treatment to be successful. I was devastated. Slowly, my complex migraines became less frequent. However, I had almost constant headaches and began having intense pain in my neck, shoulders, and back.
All of which had been lying dormant due to my body being adapted to my misalignment. Everything was inflamed and angry due to my treatment. After about 6 months my chiropractor gave me the green light to gradually start working out again. I still have to receive frequent care from my chiropractor and am limited in what exercises I can do.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I wanted to give up several times. When I wasn’t feeling supported by my family and pretty much any time I hit a road block for the first year. There was something different about this weightloss journey I am on. I didn’t let myself give up like every other time. I think that it was coming to the realization that there were not going to be any “magic pills” or quick fixes and I HAD to change my lifestyle forever. Also I couldn’t let myself and my children down anymore.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit several plateaus and continue to hit them. Every time I’m stuck and the scale won’t budge I think of a way to shock my system for example cutting somethign else out of my diet that is unhealthy or just paying more attention to my exercise and oral intake. For the last two plateaus I hit I did a green smoothie and juice detox which works very well. Both times I have done this I have lost a pound a day.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
The first year I lost about 40lbs. In the second year I the rest because I saw the progress and became very driven to make as much progess as possible. In January of 2016 I hired a personal trainer and really cleaned up my diet. In March of this year I switched to a Vegan diet which has also accelerated my weightloss.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Most of my victories have been off of the scale. The biggest victory is finally being able to love myself after 36 years of life. I have also went from a size 2X top to a size medium and size 20 pants to a size 8.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My daily diet comparison is like night and day. When I was at my heaviest I binged on fast food and ate emotionally. Now I’m a vegan and eat very little processed foods and keep my processed sugar intake to almos none. Every once and a while I do have a treat. My diet is now focused on nutrition rather than what tastes good. In doing this my taste buds have changed and I crave healthy food.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before I was completely sedentary. I wanted to be in bed most of the time if I wasn’t sitting at my desk at work. Now I work out 4-6 times a week. I am currently training to run a 10K and do strenght training workouts a few times a week.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
Drink enough water. Half of your body weight in ounces is ideal. The water a person drinks during a workout does not count though. There are no magic pills or shakes that will work for sustainable weightloss. Sure you will lost some weight, but as soon as you stop the shakes/pills the weight will come back. Start slow. Don’t try to go from eating a terrible diet and being completely sedentary to the other end of the spectrum overnight. Make slow sustainable changes that you can live with for the rest of your life. If you fall off of the plan and eat an entire pizza in one sitting don’t beat yourself up over it. Just get right back on the path. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND NEVER GIVE UP!!!!
